Welcome to Your Suburb, East Brisbane 4169
East Brisbane in an inner city suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
Situated on the south side of the Brisbane River, 3 kilometres East of the
Central Business District, it is bounded by the Brisbane River, Norman Creek and
Wellington Road.
It is an area rich in history dating back to the early settlement days of
Brisbane. First surveyed in 1850. Reverend Thomas Mowbray purchased land in 1851
along the riverfront which subsequently developed into the area known as
Mowbraytown. Immigrating to Moreton Bay Penal Settlement in 1847 Rev Mowbray
became known as the father of Presbyterianism after opening the first
Presbyterian Church in Grey Street, South Brisbane. His name is still
remembered in the naming of Mowbray Terrace and Mowbray Park.
Mowbray Park is the site of the earliest World War I Memorial in Brisbane,
built in 1916-17 and dedicated to all soldiers, sailors and nurses. Other
landmarks in East Brisbane include the heritage-listed East Brisbane State
School and the former Classic Cinema in Stanley Street, which operated in the
1930's and 40's and today lives on as a martial arts centre.
Predominantly residential because of it closeness to the city, there is a
strip of commercial and light industrial along Wellington Road and Stanley
Street. The eastern side of the suburb is dominated by the Anglican Church
Grammar School on the banks of Norman Creek.
