| In 1957, at a monthly meeting of the Camp Hill - Carina Branch of the
A.L.P. Mr Roy McGregor moved that the branch should do something
about the lack of sporting and playing fields for the youth of the area.
Mr Jack Ryan, president of the branch ruled that the motion was not a
matter for the branch, but would chair a meeting of interested members
after the normal meeting. At this meeting Mr Clem Jones volunteered to
approach the Brisbane City Council about the vacant land at the end of
Stanley Road.
On the 30th June 1957, the inagural meeting of the 'Camp Hill - Carina Welfare Association' was held under the gum trees near where the the Bowls Club now stands. The Welfare Association decided to lease 5 acres of the Reserve that was a badly neglected trotting track being used as an illegal dumping ground and try to provide sporting fields for the youth of the area. Association members spent many hours on weekends and after work in clearing the land and the Council took away 13 truck loads of non-combustible material. Monthly Horse Shows (gymkhana) were commenced and by December the lease was extended to the whole 42 acres of the Reserve. In 1959 the Horse Shows were discontinued after the death of a rider and in the same year 'Carina Bowls Club' and 'East Carina Junior Rugby Football Club' were formed. Between 1965 and 1979 the 'Bulimba Junior Hockey Club' used the Vince Herbert Oval area, before moving to the Colmslie Hockey Centre. 1966 saw the official opening of the Pool complex which started with just the 50 metre pool and the Squash Courts. For the 4th Australian Paraplegic Games in April all field events including Archery and Wheelchair races were held on the Kyle-Little Oval, Table Tennis in the Squash Courts and Swimming in the pool. The 'Carina Leagues Club' was formed and on 13th September 1971, granted a licence on 22nd October to operate under Chadwick Hall. In 1982 the association was appointed as trustees under a Deed of Grant for the purpose of Recreation, Health and Welfare. The same year the 'All Gauge Model Railway Club' set up an old demountable school class room as a Club House next to the Pool Complex. In 1986 the Kyle-Little Oval was converted from Cricket to Baseball. The following year the 'Mater Hill Cricket Club' joined the complex using the Alan Ramsay Oval as their number 1 field. In 1994 the Basketball Courts and the Baseball Diamond were used for the World Masters Games. 1997 saw the 'Balmoral Little Athletics' and the 'Spartans Water Polo Club' join the Clem Jones Complex. 2007 was the 33rd Crackerjack Carnival, and the Clem Jones Centre's 50th Anniversary. |
